homebirth, is it for me?

Ben watched the business of being born today so he brought up the topic of homebirth and whether its an option for us this time... at first I thought, nah... but now its growing on me and I am wondering if it might be a good option for us.

I had a pph with K so had to have a canula in my hand for the next two, but am thinking I will do some research and see if thats a total reason for me to have a hospital birth this time, my labours are relatively quick (under 3 hrs), and I havent used any pain relief. I would love to have a waterbirth and its a definite option if we have a homebirth.

Childcare would be easier too if we are at home, the kids would be there and could be involved if they wanted to be, but would be able to play if they didnt... this is definitely going to need some further research into the concept. My midwife does do homebirths so am sure she would be supportive as long as there are no medical reasons not too.. eg anaemia...

Some midwives will "risk you out" because of the previous pph. Totally depends on the midwife. I've have done a few hbs in this situation. You can waterbirth in hospital. The tubs used to be ok (not perfect) at Palmy.

I have tried to have a waterbirth twice, with K the bath was only half run when I went into transition, with O I was in the bath and had to get out because pubic ligament was holding his head wrong.... the pph was with 1st baby, had no problems with the next two. had to have active third stage, and cannula in for syntocinon etc... will definitely talk to paula about it.

depends how significant your pph was--most homebirth midwives carry several drugs to deal with pph, and you can do some significant fundal massage...on the other hand, if you needed any manual extraction of the placenta, there'd be less attraction to keeping you home, or if your pph didn't respond to attention quickly.

Home birth is great! It's not for everyone, but I hope you find it's for you.

I had to go to theatre for manual removal of the placenta, because it came away in pieces. I lost around 2000ml of blood so it was probably too big to be allowed a homebirth.

I am just thinking about our options, I see my mw in a fortnight so will be talking to her then.

This book is considered a bit of a 'bible' in this area New Active Birth: A Concise Guide to Natural Childbirth
