self help

I went to the library today, was really good, got some books on depression and how to overcome it, am hoping to read and find some other ways to cope with it. there were some interesting reference books on womens mental health too, which were good to look at, especially the stuff dealing with meds and lactation.

my first encounters with a psychiatrist were interesting he was of the belief that there were no actual benefits to breastfeeding. he and i didnt agree on this. I have found breastfeeding to be a good way to ensure that I have bonded with my babies, I think it would have been too easy to just leave them to ben if I had bottle fed them, by breastfeeding them I feel responsible and connected to them, even at 3 in the morning.

O is still breastfeed, hes nearly 11 months, so will soon be my longest go at doing this. I love feeding him though its really nice and makes life easier when you are out and about etc.

So am going to read some books to help myself understand a few things, and am looking to the future with my beautiful family and hubby.

I got a lovely parcel of books in the post today too, one is an autobiography by Lauren roche, its quite interesting so far, so thanks GG for sending them.

I brestfed my first baby two years through post natal depression and undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Without that bonding she and i would have been strangers. I do think for some mums it's vital to stick with it. for others it's better to give it up.

I was unable to breastfeed my son because of the meds i have to take for BPD. he and I have a strong bond and i love him more for the fact that I haven't always had to be the one for the 3am feed.

Go for what works for you! Shrinks are like all Drs - some right for you others not. If the relationship isn;t working from my experience it;s better to get a new one.

hey Rebecca.... I have found that I am open to doing what needs to be done to get through whatever the current battle is... life is easier when I take this apporach, but at the moment I am feeling good and doing quite well, so its a nice feeling to enjoy.

Have you come across MBCT? Their book is easy to get hold of here so if you want it and can't find it in NZ let me know and I can get you a copy. You can read an extract on amazon uk. I think their methods are now available through the NHS in the UK.

There are many other resources for working with / healing depression through meditation, some focussing directly on the depression, others more focussed on increasing happiness. If you're interested let me know and I can give you some links.

Buddhist forms of meditation and mindfulness practice are often used in therapeutic ways without any religious context, so if they interest you I don't think there would be a conflict with your personal beliefs / faith.

hey E that book sounds interesting, I am hoping that landmark forum may help me to release some of the past so that I can move on in life.
